  Getting Started
Teaching In Korea - The Process

Getting to know the people who are sourcing your position personally is the most important factor in finding the right destination. We are happy to introduce ourselves by phone or email as requested by you.
Contact Gone2Korea today and one of our staff will gladly assist you.

1. After receiving your application, we will contact you by phone to properly introduce ourselves, conduct a brief interview and answer any initial questions you may have. Visit our Gone2Korea Application page to get started.

2. If requested, we will discuss different location options and provide information as requested by you.

3. If requested, we will send you a copy of our 'Information Pack' which contains additional information not provided on this site.

4. Make sure you have all the necessary documents at your disposal which ncludes a hardcopy of your original university degree, officially sealed transcripts, valid up to date passport, and 4 passport photos (color and date stamped). Please see our Requirements to teach in Korea page for more details

5. We will start formally presenting your profile to schools that match the criteria on the application you submitted to us in addition to any details we discussed over the phone and via email.

6. Once a school indicates an interest in your profile, we will present you with a thorough job description.  The number of offers we present you with will depend on the number of schools who mention interest in your profile. This can range from 1 to 3 at a time depending on the time of year, your experience, the area you are looking to relocate and so on.

7. From the list of schools available you will select your ideal school and location.

8. We will contact your chosen school to let them know you are interested in working for them.

9. A telephone interview will be arranged between you and the director, or staff member of the school you have selected.

10. If the interview is a success, the school will send us a contract for you to review.

11. At this point we will provide you with a western teachers' (who is currently working at the school) contact information.  This is one of the most important steps in the process and we encourage all applicants to thoroughly discuss things with the current teachers.

12. We will present you with a contract from the school and review it together to make sure it suits your demands, i.e. vacation time, student age, weekly hours, and so on. Please be advised the majority of Korean ESL Contracts are generic in nature. We will provide proper explanations of things you may not be familiar with.

13. Assuming the discussions with the western teacher are positive and the contract is acceptable, you will then send your documents (1 copy of your sealed transcripts, university degree, 3 passport photos, a hard copy of your resume, a photocopy of your valid passport and the signed contract) to Korea for processing with Immigration.

14. The Korean Department of Immigration will then forward your 'issuance number' to the school you signed the contract with. The school will then notify us of the visa issuance number, at which point we will send the number directly to you.  Obtaining the issuance number can take anywhere between 6 – 15 business days.

15. At this point, you will need to download a blank Korean Consulate Visa Application Form to complete. We will offer you the information required to complete this form for the Korean Consulate.

16.
We will direct you to the Korean consulate in your area.

17. You will bring your passport, the second set of your sealed transcripts (if you are a North American citizen), 1 official passport photo and the visa application form to the consulate. If the consulate is not within your proximity, you will need to mail it with a prepaid return envelope enclosed. The consulate will charge you a processing fee for this service.   This fee will vary depending on what country you reside.   The consulates will hold your passport for up to 5 business days. Please reference our consulates directory for more information on the consulate in your region. We advise contacting the appropriate consulate before visiting or mailing anything to them to confirm their address and visa procedures and requirements.

18. Once we have confirmed what date your passport will be returned (the working visa will be on one of your passport pages)a date for your departure, which is suitable for you and the school, will be arranged.

19. We will send you a copy of our 'Pre-Departure Pack' which contains airport information, general Korean gestures, packing details, basic Korean words, etc.

20. Say goodbye, get on the plane and start your adventure!!!

Keep in contact, we love hearing great stories about your adventures, it brings back memories of the great times we had in the past. Visit our Gone2Korea Testimonials page for teacher feedback.

It takes on average 4-6 weeks for this process to be completed. The length of time will vary based on the time of year, and the school's hiring needs.

Sometimes there will be the option of getting your E2 Visa processed in Japan. This is generally the case when a school needs a teacher ASAP and cannot wait for the processing to be completed in your home country. In this situation you would enter Korea on a Short stay visa or tourist visa and travel to Japan to get your E2 Visa processed. This cost would be paid for in full by your hiring school. We will explain in more detail if this arises. Visit our ESL Important Facts page for more details on the Japan run

We realize that the process may seem rather lengthy and time consuming, although in reality things usually go smooth and require less time than you would predict.
