Requirements For Teaching In Korea

New (Dec 15th 2007) - All applicants looking to teach English in Korea are required to offer a Criminal Background Check and Health Statement when they submit their documents to Korean Immigration. Specific processes will vary from country to country so we strongly advise contacting Gone2Korea or the Korean consulate in your region for further details.

Anyone who decides to teach English in Korea must have an E2 or E1 visa.  An E2 or E1 visa is a temporary 12 month working visa that is granted by the Korean Department of Immigration. For more information on the various working visa options please visit our Korean Working Visas page. In order to obtain this visa you must have a number of qualifications and supporting documents to verify those qualifications. There are 3 steps to the job and visa application process.

1. Job Requirements ( Initial Application )

In order to qaulify for a position to teach in Korea, applicants must have the following documents and meet the basic requirements as set forth by the Korean Department of Immigration.

A) Nationality: Applicants must come from a native English speaking country. The Korean government has classified 7 nations in this category:

  • Canada
  • United States
  • South Africa
  • Australia
  • United Kingdom
  • New Zealand
  • Ireland

B) Degree: Applicants must have a bachelors degree, 3 year degree or greater, from a recognized university. The university must reside within one of the 7 nations listed above. The physical degree will be required by Korean Immigration, no scans or copies allowed. College diplomas will not be sufficient, you must have a B.A.

C) Officially Sealed Transcripts: Applicants must have a minimum of 2 copies of their transcripts that have been officially sealed by their graduated university. Each envelope that contains the transcripts MUST have the official university seal on it and be stamped or pressed by the university over the crease of the envelope. Immigration requires this sealed document to verify the authenticity of the applicants degree. There are strictly no exceptions!

D)
Passport: Applicants must have a valid passport. The passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after arrival to South Korea. Failure to have this minimum will result in denied access into the country when going through customs. (Gone2Korea recommends having a valid passport for 12 months after your arrival to Korea). Make sure your passport has at least two full blank pages for the consulate to place your Visa. Failure to have one blank page will result in the consulate refusing to process your Visa.

E) NEW Criminal Background Check (CBC): Applicants must obtain a criminal background check or Criminal Clearance Letter, to proove they are clear of any criminal offences. Each country has its own specific process involved in obtaining what is required by both Korean Immigration and the Korean Consulate in your region. Please contact Gone2Korea for further details.

Canadian appilcants must request a "Vulnerable Sector Screening" from their local police services. The CBC must be notarised by a 'Notary Public' and must be issued within 90 days of you submitting it to Korean Immigration.

American applicants must request a "Name Background" search OR a "Name Background AND Fingerprint" search. A fingerprint search alone will not be sufficient. The CBC must be "Apostille Authenticated" and it must be issued within 90 days of you submitting it to Korean Immigration. Please visit American Apostille Offices for more details.

British and Australian applicants
must request a "Name Background" search OR a "Name Background AND Fingerprint" search. A fingerprint search alone will not be sufficient. The CBC must be "Apostille Authenticated" and it must be issued within 90 days of you submitting it to Korean Immigration.

New Zealanders, Irish and South African applicants must contact Gone2Korea for further details.

F) NEW Health Statement: Applicants will be required to submit a health statement form to Korean Immigration when they apply for their working visa. Gone2Korea will offer you this form when the time is appropriate. You must answer this form as honestly as possible. Shortly after your arrival to Korea, you will be required to visit one of the local hospitals or health clinics to undergo a health screening. You will be tested for HIV, other contagious diseases and illicit drug use (including marijuana use). It's best for you to see your doctor within 3 months prior to heading to Korea to make sure you are free of any major sickness or disease. If the responses on your health statement form are inconsistent with your health screening results, your visa could be revoked and your contract terminated. Ultimately you could be deported and blacklisted, making it almost impossible to work in Korea again. SEE YOUR DOCTOR!

G) Name Verification: Your name must appear the exact same on all documents. If you have a middle name or initial or if your name is written differently on one or more of the listed items above, your application could be rejected. Please ensure that your documents match. If you need to request a new degree or transcripts to match your passport please do so as soon as possible.

If you meet these requirements, you are welcome to Apply to Gone2Korea today. If you do not yet have the above mentioned documents, please Contact Us to discuss how we can assist you in obtaining these required items

2. Visa Issuance Requirements ( Korean Immigration - In Korea )

Once you have selected a school to work for, the following list of documents need to be forwarded to Korean Immigration in South Korea. Once they have received your documents they will start processing your visa issuance number. Your visa issuance number is an authorization number that gives the Korean consulates authority to process your E2 visa. This usually takes 5 to 10 business days. You are responsible for the cost of FedEx priority courier mailing of these documents to South Korea.

  • University degree (Notarized degrees are also accepted, however you will need to have it officially notarized by the Korean Consulate in your region. We advise sending your original degree when possible, as some schools will not pay for your airfare upfront if you send a notarized copy).
  • 1 set of officially sealed transcripts (as explained above)
  • Signed and dated contract
  • 3 passport photos (must be color photos and date stamped if possible)
  • Photocopy of your passsport (photo and profile page)
  • Hard copy of your resume
  • Health Statement Form (Gone2Korea will provide you with this)
  • Criminal Background Check (Contact Gone2Korea or your local Korean consulate for more details)

3. Visa Processing Requirements ( Korean Consulate - Your Country )

After your visa issuance number has been processed you will need to bring or mail another group of documents to the Korean Consulate in your region. If you are mailing these documents we advise using a priority mail service. Please speak to the consulate in your region to determine what courier services they will deal with. You should include a prepaid priority mail envelope in this package if you require the consulate to mail your passport back to you. After the consulate processes your documents, they will stamp your pasport with the E2 working visa allowing you to legally enter South Korea as a foreign worker for 1 year. This process usually takes 3 to 5 business days.

  • Visa issuance number (Gone2Korea will provide you with this)
  • Completed E2 Visa Application
  • Valid passport (with at least two blank pages for processing)
  • Visa application fee (Must be cash or money order only - money orders must be made out to "Korean Consulate General" NOTE: Personal cheques will be refused)
  • Additional set of sealed transcripts (North America citizens only)
  • 1 passport sized photo (color photo and date stamped)
  • Criminal Background Check (photocopy of the original)
  • Photocopy of your original degree
  • Health Statement Form (you will be required to sumbit another form, make sure your responses on this form match the responses you submitted on the form sent to Korean Immigration).

4. Additional Requirements ( Personal Character Traits )

  • Adventurous
  • Open Minded
  • Respectful
  • Motivated
  • Willingness to learn as well as teach
  • Adaptability to cultural differences

Having all your documents updated and at your disposal before accepting a position is very strongly advised. This helps make the process more efficient and less time consuming for everyone involved. Please remember that you are representing your country of origin while you are living and teaching in Korea. Although the job is fun and there are many exciting things to do while you are in Korea, it is extremely important that you respect their culture and traditions. After all, it is their country and not a playground for foreigners, as some people wrongly think.

You do not require previous teaching experience or educational certifications in order to qualify for a teaching position, although it does give you an edge when directors are considering your application.
